India to become world’s second largest smartphone market by 2017

July 02, 2015

According to Strategy Analytics, India will overtake the United States (US) to become the world’s second largest smartphone market by 2017. Meanwhile, global smartphone sales will increase from 1.5 billion units in 2015 to 1.7 billion by 2017. China, India and United States are the leading markets driving smartphone growth.

The research firm states that smartphone sales in India will increase from 118 million smartphones in 2015 to 174 million in 2017. The key growth drivers for the Indian smartphone market are low smartphone penetration, expanding retail availability of devices, wealthier middle-class consumers, and aggressive promotions from local smartphone brands like Micromax.

Smartphone sales in the US will grow from 164 million in 2015 to 169 million in 2017. Meanwhile, smartphone sales in China will grow from 458 million in 2015 to 505 million in 2017.
