Over 400,000 telecom towers consume more than 3 billion litres of diesel and put more than 6 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.  As a result the telecom industry and the government have been encouraging the use of renewable energy technologies and several programs have been created to encourage their implementation.
