Akshay Grover, Vice-President, Transaction Advisory Services, Ernst & Young
In fact, it is this aspect of the sector that keeps him motivated. “What keeps my interest alive is the ever-changing face of the Indian telecom sector. It is in a constant state of flux, it is in a very dynamic phase right now and things will only get more exciting from hereon.”
Optimistic outlook aside, he also relies on an open style of management. “I believe in giving my team a lot of space to operate in,” he says. He learnt the value of this from his own experience in the early days of his career, where the people he worked with gave him early responsibility, “more than I deserved or warranted at that time. The free rein I enjoyed at that time has helped me grow and make the best of every opportunity that came my way in the past seven or eight years,” he says.
A management graduate from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Grover joined Ernst & Young as a telecom consultant in 2004. He worked with the leading operators in the country on various subjects, ranging from revenue assurance to cost reduction and organisational restructuring. He then moved on to the merger and acquisition (M&A) division of Ernst & Young, where he worked on projects related to the telecom and technology sectors.
He left Ernst & Young for a brief period and joined the investment team of EIT, the sovereign wealth fund of the Government of Dubai, focused on the telecom, media and technology (TMT) spaces. In this position, he led the strategic growth of EIT’s investee companies across the Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) region.
He rejoined Ernst & Young in early 2010, and currently focuses on mergers and acquisitions, fund-raising, and restructuring in the TMT space.
He has undertaken several interesting assignments, among them advising a telecom operator during the 3G and BWA auctions. “It was very challenging, as we had to devote undivided attention to the project,” he says. “Besides, we were under immense pressure, as the auction process was fiercely competitive and the bidding amounts rose every day.”
When not advising telecom heavyweights, Grover unwinds by travelling with his wife, going for long drives and playing tennis.- Most Viewed
