Vivek Khemani
Vivek Khemani is driven by his keen interest in technology and people. He says his current stint at ConnectM is his most memorable assignment because here his commitment "goes beyond being just another employee". "I have spent the most important part of my professional career, so far, in this organisation. I would like to give my best to succeed beyond the set expectations. While my role is designated as strategy and finance head for a corporate spin-out start-up, my responsibility is beyond finance, and spans overall enterprise development as well," he says.
Khemani's previous stints have been largely centred on strategy, finance and enterprise development. He started his career with Chrysalis Capital (now ChrysCap), a venture capital firm, where he was part of the company's first associate team.
Thereafter, he joined Sasken Communication Technologies in 2001 as a business analyst for strategy decisions.
He then moved into corporate financial planning in 2003 and was a key member of the team responsible for the successful Sasken initial public offering. From there, he moved into corporate development where he was dealing with strategy, and mergers and acquisitions. He played a major role in acquiring a major deal for the company in 2007, which led to the formation of ConnectM.
His current portfolio keeps him on his toes. As head of strategy and finance, several areas, such as finance, marketing, human resources (HR), administration, and resourcing come under his purview.
His style of management is focused on delivering knowledge through frequent interactions with his team. He says, "It helps the team grow and become independent. I feel that my interactions with people are behind my success, both professionally and personally." He also believes in being "reporting oriented."
Khemani believes that in the coming years, a number of new trends will emerge in the Indian telecom sector. "The sector will lead the revolution for an inclusive growth for the country. The business prospects for the telecom industry will ensure that the focus over the next few years will be on rural telephony, which will help bridge the digital divide. In terms of technology, 3G will lead the future and change the wireless device from just a means to communicate to a means wherein you experience entertainment, transact and do business," he says.
Work aside, he enjoys watching movies and reading. The Calvin and Hobbes series are a particular favourite of his. He is also an amateur collector of masks from different countries.
