Tanmoy Prasad, IT Adviser, Government of Haryana

July 31, 2014

Tanmoy Prasad has been working in the IT industry for over 19 years. He started his career with an IT company where he was looking after enterprise-wide e-mailing and faxing solutions, and was involved in managing WAN networks and communication applications of the ITC Group.

During 2000-01, Prasad dealt with communication protocols primarily in the telecom domain, writing switch interfaces for billing applications and developing mediation device for subscriber line management systems. In 2002-03, he entered the field of e-governance, working on a project undertaken by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, where most of his work pertained to electronic filing of patents. For over two years thereafter, he worked on the implementation and roll-out of IT infrastructure for the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, for the MCA 21 project. He then worked for the central government’s e-governance project, National Service Delivery Gateway, targeting integration of various e-governance applications. He also assisted in developing an electronic window for the submission of forms. He has been a member of various committees on policy matters of the Department of Electronics and IT.

In 2009, he moved to the Haryana government. In his current role as IT adviser to the Government of Haryana, he leads the IT infrastructure management in the state, overseeing service delivery, applications management and IT infrastructure development.

Prasad’s management style includes creating a positive environment and motivating people to enhance their capabilities and improve their knowledge to deliver results.

Although Prasad claims that impatience and inhibition are his weaknesses, he has come a long way in overcoming them. “My experience in working on government projects has helped me develop perseverance,” he says. His most memorable assignment was the MCA 21 project, which was inaugurated by the then prime minister. His targets in the near future are to identify areas in Haryana’s IT infrastructure that need to be improved. He is also planning to set up a large state-of-the-art data centre for the state government.

Prasad, who grew up in Giridih, one of the poorest districts of Jharkhand, says he owes his achievements to his parents. Although he spends most of his time in Haryana, his wife, who is also an IT engineer, and his son live in Delhi. He enjoys spending time with his family and listening to music in his spare time.
