Kapil Mehta, Chief Executive Officer, Birla Furukawa Fibre Optics Limited
The biggest challenge before Kapil Mehta, chief executive officer (CEO), Birla Furukawa Fibre Optics Limited, is to keep pace with the rapid growth anticipated in the optic fibre cable (OFC) space. “The demand for OFC in the country is likely to witness considerable growth with the emergence of new technologies and launch of various government initiatives. Technology-wise, backhaul mediums that offer high speeds and bandwidth are required to accommodate the increasing data usage on the 3G platform and for the roll-out of 4G services. This will boost OFC usage,” he says.
“Moreover, the implementation of the National Optical Fibre Network project and the Network for Spectrum scheme for the defence sector by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will provide a fillip to the OFC segment.”
What will these initiatives mean for the company? “We expect significant opportunities to emerge with the roll-out of 3G/4G long term evolution networks and the implementation of the National Telecom Policy,” says Mehta.
To tap these opportunities, the company has adopted a forward-looking approach and is in the process of augmenting its manufacturing facility. “We believe that product quality and support, coupled with a strong brand image, will be the key to gaining share in this fiercely competitive market.”
Commenting on industry challenges, he says, “Despite the anticipated growth in demand for OFC, increased competition will continue to add pressure on prices. Most of the raw material for manufacturing OFC is imported and the slide in the rupee against the dollar has substantially impacted costs. Hence there will be huge pressure for continued initiatives to reduce costs by using new technologies and exploring new markets.”
An engineering graduate with over 20 years of experience in the OFC field, Mehta has worked in different M.P. Birla group companies. In his current position, he is focusing on strengthening the company’s position in its areas of operation.
In terms of management style, Mehta says he believes in keeping things simple. “Each member of the team should be aware of his responsibilities and be given an opportunity to air his views. I believe in giving credit where it is due while supporting the weaker links.”
Mehta enjoys spending time with his family, travelling, listening to music, watching movies, and keeping abreast of the latest technology advancements. He also follows various sports very keenly.
