In a career spanning 22 years, Subir Bhatnagar has worked with leading technology companies like Lucent Technologies, Nortel (now a part of AGC) and Wipro Networks. He has experience in the area of technology design and consulting, technical sales, marketing as well as product management.

Bhatnagar believes that telecom and technology go hand in  hand. According to him, the sector has been an early adopter of technology, be it for enterprise security or cost optimisation or applications targeted at mobile users. Hence, shifts in technology impact telecom companies first.

In his current role as vice-president and global head, solutions, AGC Networks Limited, Bhatnagar leads a team of technology solution consultants in fields such as unified communications, contact centres, customer experience applications and network infrastructure. “My role is as exciting as it is challenging, as globally, enterprises in every region have their own technological challenges that are particular to that region only.” Talking about challenges, he says, “Technology is a fast changing landscape. In an organisation like AGC, which offers vertical-specific solutions, my prime responsibility as solutions head is to ensure that updated solutions are relevant for a particular industry. This is the biggest challenge.”

AGC is expanding globally and so are Bhatnagar’s role and responsibilities. Till last year, the company was focused on promoting Indian verticals. Now, it is also focusing on enhancing customer experience across geographies.

According to Bhatnagar, cloud computing will be extremely relevant going forward. Enterprise customers will witness varied usage of cloud, beginning from social media to secured storage. Bhatnagar also believes that there will be a surge in the uptake of applications, as retail customers enhance their 4G experience.

He describes his management style as a combination of coaching and pace setting. “I ensure that my team is updated on all facets of technology and I update them with the information I have and in the process, I learn from them. I am a firm believer that as a technology team, we must keep a step ahead of the pace at which technology is changing.” To attain this, he has set high standards of performance, which he also pursues. “I have an obsession to do things perfectly and faster, and demand the same from my team as well.”

A graduate in electronics engineering from Bangalore University, Bhatnagar studied and travelled across the country during his schooldays. His personal interests include reading and listening to music. He is also passionate about trekking and enjoys spending time with his family, which comprises his mother, his wife, a homemaker, and his 16-year-old son Aditya.
