The auction process for broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum has come to an end with the all-India bid price closing at Rs 128.72 billion. While Infotel, a fixed line service provider and a subsidiary of Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited (HFCL), has won a pan-Indian licence, Aircel has won eight regional licences, Bharti Airtel and Qualcomm four each, Tikona five and Augere in one circle. Companies including Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Tata Communications and Reliance Wimax Limited opted out of the biding process. Like the 3G spectrum auctions, Mumbai and Delhi received the highest bid amounts of over Rs 22.72 billion and Rs 22.21 billion respectively. The government has garnered Rs 385.43 billion from the BWA auctions. Combined with Rs 677.19 billion from the 3G spectrum auction, the government's total revenues now stand at over Rs 1,060 billion, more than three times the projected Rs 350 billion.
