Sprint, the third largest US mobile phone company, more than doubled its profits in the second quarter of 2005, beating market expectations and sending its shares higher. Sprint performed better than its rivals, Verizon and BellSouth, due to its ability to control costs. The company, which expected to close its $35 billion acquisition of Nextel Communications in the third quarter, raised its earnings forecast for the next quarter.
