Telemex announces its second quarter results for 2005
Mexican telecom major Telefonos de Mexico (Telemex), has announced its second quarter results for 2005. During this quarter, the company posted sales of 40.2 billion pesos ($3.8 billion), up 26.7 per cent from the April-June 2004 period, after including the operations of Brazil's Embratel, which was purchased in mid-2004. The net profit of 6.5 billion pesos was 42 per cent higher than the 4.6 billion pesos reported in the corresponding period of the previous year, raising profit margins to 16.3 per cent from 14.5 per cent. Profits per share rose slightly from $0.32 to $0.52 per American depository receipt. The results include a one-time gain of $52 million from the sale of its stake in MCI to Verizon. Telemex reported major growth in its internet business, where the number of broadband accounts more than doubled to 772,000.
