Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has become the first telecom operator in the country to commercially launch 3G mobile services. The service, currently available in the New Delhi Municipal Council area, has an activation fee of Rs 500 and a monthly rental of Rs 599. Calls made to another operator's network are charged at Re 1 per minute, while calls within MTNL's network cost Re 0.60 per minute. For video calls, the charges vary between Rs 1.80 and Rs 3 per minute. MTNL is investing Rs 5 billion to roll out 3G networks in Delhi and Mumbai over the next two years.
