DoT has rejected the recommendations of its internal subcommittee on mobile number portability (MNP) and has decided to adhere to its earlier policy of allowing customers to shift between GSM and CDMA services of the same operator, with the introduction of additional safeguards. The committee, which was set up to look into the feasibility of intra-operator portability, had stated that such a move would result in revenue losses to the exchequer. It had also warned that allowing intra-operator portability without having to go through the centralised agency could result in manipulation of subscriber figures. To check revenue losses, DoT has decided that if an operator wishes to carry out internal porting, it should pay the same fee to the government that the centralised agency in charge of MNP pays for this service.
