DoT is planning to allot radio frequencies in the eGSM band for new operators such as Shyam-Sistema which intend to launch CDMAbased mobile services. Meanwhile, the existing GSM operators and RCOM, which predominantly offers CDMA services, are currently demanding the right to use the eGSM band. RCOM had earlier applied to exchange its GSM spectrum for eGSM spectrum. In India, the eGSM band, though traditionally earmarked for CDMA services, has never been allotted for the service.
