TRAI has announced that mobile tariffs in India are now the cheapT est in the world. The rates have fallen by 35 per cent from 200304 to 2004-05, while the subscriber base has gone up to 52.1 million from 33.6 million in 2003-04, adding 18.5 million new users in 2004-05. The minimum effective per minute charge for local outgoing calls for post-paid mobile service has come down from Rs 1.90 in March 2004 to Rs 1.20 in March 2005, a decline of 35 per cent. STD charges for distances beyond 200 km have been reduced by 33 per cent to Rs 2.40 per minute from Rs 3.60 per minute. Similarly, ILD charges have come down due to certain promotional tariff plans of ILDOs as well as reduced ADC. Calls to the US, Canada and Europe cost Rs 7.20 per minute compared to the Rs 9.60 per minute being charged in 2003-04. International leased line charges have also decreased by 35 per cent for low capacity and 70 per cent for higher capacity lines.
