There was a 29 per cent growth in the number of telephone connections in India in 2004-05. During the year, the teledensity increased by 1.91, from 7.17 in 2003-04 to 9.08 in 2004-05. This is comparable to the increase in teledensity that took place between 1948 and 1998. According to data available with TRAI, there were a total of 98.08 million telephone connections as of March 31, 2005 as against 76.16 million the previous year. There were a total of 45.9 million fixed line customers and 52.17 million subscribers. The GSM base stood at 41.03 million, accounting for 78.6 per cent of mobile users in the country. In March, a total of 1.73 million subscribers were added with GSM players accounting for 1.24 million. CDMA and fixed line subscribers accounted for the remaining 0.37 million.
