The communications and IT ministry is planning to further enhance rural connectivity with support from the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund. First, it intends to set up 4,000 additional towers within the next two months. Second, it is planning to set up broadband infrastructure. Meanwhile, CDMA operators have reportedly told the government that an additional carrier in the existing frequency band will enable them to start offering high speed data services in rural areas. They have also sought fiscal incentives such as lower spectrum charges and licence fees for these services.
