TRAI is to soon set up a National Do Not Call (NDNC) Registry which will contain the telephone numbers of subscribers who do not want to receive unsolicited commercial calls (UCCs). For every UCC, telemarketers will have to pay a penalty of Rs 500 to Rs 1,000. TRAI has also approached the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks Association to ensure that the banking sector does not engage telemarketers without valid registration certificates issued by DoT. All telemarketers are required to register with DoT within the next three months and submit their calling lists periodically to NDNC.
