The government is likely to ask satellite-based TV channels, which currently use the lower extended C Band of satellite spectrum, to shift to the normal C Band.

March 15, 2007

The government is likely to ask satellite-based TV channels, which currently use the lower extended C Band of satellite spectrum, to shift to the normal C Band. This will enable the government to release 200 MHz of spectrum for wireless broadband services.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recommended that DoT receive 100 MHz of spectrum for broadband wireless applications in the 3.4-3.6 GHz band, which is currently occupied by the Department of Space for its INSAT satellite series. On the other hand, the lower extended C Band, 3.4-3.6 GHz can be used for offering terrestrial broadband solutions.
