TRAI to give final recommendations on call drops by mid-October 2015
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has stated that it will give final recommendations on the issue of call drops and compensation to consumers by mid-October 2015. This comes after the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had sought TRAI’s suggestions on the issue of call drops.
TRAI recently issued a consultation paper seeking views of the industry stakeholders on a proposal to compensate the consumers for call drops. The telecom regulator has proposed that users should not be charged for any call that gets dropped within five seconds. If a call gets dropped after five seconds, the last pulse of the call that got dropped should not be charged. TRAI has sought stakeholders’ suggestions on how a mobile user should be compensated for call drops. The regulator has suggested various alternatives for the same which include credit of talktime in minutes/seconds and credit of talktime in monetary terms for the dropped calls. The last date for submitting the comments on the paper is September 28, 2015.
Meanwhile, TRAI has directed telecom operators to resolve the issue of call drops within 15 days. The telecom regulator intends to carry out a test drive after 15 days in Mumbai and Delhi so as to assess the situation. TRAI has further contended that it may take necessary action if the issue is not resolved.
