Uninor operating loss narrows down to NOK 90 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2015

July 22, 2015

Uninor has posted financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2015. The operator, owned by Norway’s Telenor follows January-December financial year.

Uninor’s operating loss for the quarter ended June 30, 2015 has narrowed down to NOK 90 million. The operator had reported an operating loss of NOK 170 million in the corresponding quarter last year.  The operator has reported positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation for the quarter under review on account of increased revenues and improved gross margin following reduction in mobile termination rates by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

Further, the total revenues of the operator have increased to NOK 1,362 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2015 as compared to total revenue of NOK 1,021 million reported in the corresponding quarter in 2014. Meanwhile, the average revenue per user (ARPU) declined by 12 per cent to Rs 95 in the reported quarter as against last year. The operator has claimed the decline was primarily driven by lower voice consumption and the impact from reduced mobile termination rate, partly compensated by increased data usage.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2015, Uninor added 1.3 million subscribers witnessing a growth of 22 per cent in its subscriber base over the corresponding quarter in 2014. At present, 26 per cent of the operator’s customers are active data users.

Vivek Sood, chief executive officer, Uninor, said, “Our Internet awareness campaigns and initiatives to bring mobile Internet services to the unconnected are yielding good results. We are in the right direction to achieve our target of 50 per cent internet customers by 2017.”

For the quarter under review, Uninor made a capital expenditure of NOK 253 million mainly for capacity expansion to cater to increased traffic volumes. At present, Uninor offer services in six circles – Uttar Pradesh (West), Uttar Pradesh (East), Bihar (including Jharkhand), Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
