HTC finalises plans to manufacture handsets in India under ‘Make in India’ initiative
Taiwan-based HTC has finalised its plans to manufacture handsets in the country, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The company has entered into an agreement with Global Devices Network, which had set up a manufacturing and assembling unit in April 2015 in Noida, to manufacture handsets on contract.
The trials have already begun and commercial production is expected to start from mid-July 2015. The unit will initially cater to HTC's requirements in India and eventually Africa and the Middle East. The HTC smartphones manufactured in India will initially range from its entry-level to mid-segment devices, priced between Rs 10,000 and about Rs 25,000. It will set up its quality control unit in the contract manufacturer's plant.
Recently, HTC has expanded into contract manufacturing for its entry-to-mid-segment smartphones to reduce costs. It has tied up with third-party manufacturers in Taiwan and China, for the same. The manufacturing plans for India falls in the same line.
