Union Government may permit reselling of bandwidth

December 15, 2006

The union government may permit domestic carriers to resell bandwidth, a long-standing demand of the industry. This move would increase competition in the international private leased circuit (IPLC) sector and is slated to decrease tariffs by up to 25 per cent. At present, VSNL, Flag Telecom and Bharti Airtel have around 700 GB of bandwidth, which they cannot resell.

Meanwhile, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) may also begin regulating cost-based access charges for international bandwidth.
