Ministry of Communications and IT unveils dot Bharat domain
The Ministry of Communications and IT has launched the dot Bharat domain name in Devanagari script covering eight Indian languages. The languages are Hindi, Konkani, Bodo, Dogri, Nepali, Sindhi, Maithili and Marathi. The aim of the domain is to connect people and provide content in regional languages. The domain will be managed by National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), which will also launch domain names in other Indian languages like Bangla, Urdu, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil and Gujarati.
During the launch, the Union Minister of Communications and IT emphasised that the content in local languages is important for the future expansion of the Internet. In this regard, the government has planned to connect 60,000 villages with broadband in 2014, 100,000 in 2015 and another 100,000 in 2016 through the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN).
