DoT sets April 2007 as deadline to implement mobile number portability
October 15, 2006
DoT has set April 2007 as the deadline for implementation of mobile number portability. Prior to changing the licence conditions to accommodate such portability, DoT will initiate a fresh round of discussions with mobile operators and fine-tune some of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) suggestions on the issue. Telecom operators have opposed the move, citing the substantial investment cost of Rs 180 billion as the main reason. They have suggested that number portability should first be implemented for fixed line services.
