TRAI data also shows that in the year 2004-05, private fixed line operators pulled out of providing nearly 700 village public telephones (VPTs), leaving the onus of fulfilling the rural commitment to provide 3,000 VPTs on BSNL. Bharti Tele Ventures has disconnected the largest number of VPTs – from 607 in 2004 to zero at present. Even MTNL has completely disconnected its VPTs – from 191 in 2004 to zero.
