November 08, 2012

Tata Communications has registered revenue of Rs 42.71 billion for the quarter ended September 2012. For the corresponding period last year, the operator had reported revenue of Rs 33.73 billion. Tata communications’ company, Neotel - incorporated in South Africa, showed a strong performance in the second quarter of 2012. Its EBIDTA turned positive in the second quarter of 2012.

Operator’s income from global voice operations have increased from Rs 15.75 billion in the second quarter of 2011 to Rs 21.13 billion for the corresponding period in 2012. For the quarter ending September 2012, Tata Communications revenue from its South African operations stood at Rs 4.62 billion. Further, the operator’s global data services grew by 25 per cent on a year-on-year basis, for the quarter under consideration.

Tata Communications’ consolidated net loss has widened from Rs 2.38 billion in the second quarter of September 2011 to
Rs 2.89 billion for the corresponding period this year. The losses for the operator widened owing to regulatory changes which resulted into an additional increase in licence fee for it from six per cent to seven per cent. Going forward in 2013, this licence fee is expected to increase further.

For the quarter ended September 2012, the operator incurred a one-time actuarial loss on the Canada pension fund. Its profitability was also affected by unfavourable settlements in global voice services and spending on product creation, marketing and innovation.

Commenting on the financial results, Vinod Kumar, managing director and group chief executive officer, says, “We have sustained top-line momentum in an environment that has continued to be challenging, globally. The size and scale of our core business has been growing consistently, benefiting from a combination of our investments in global infrastructure and our innovative approach to clients’ needs across business lines and geographies.”
