Telecom subscriber base in the country stood at 999.71 million as of April 2015, says TRAI
According to latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the telephone subscriber base in the country stood at 999.71 million as of April 2015. While the number of urban subscribers stood at 580.13 million, the rural subscribers numbered 419.58 million. The wireless and wireline subscriber base stood at 973.35 million and 26.36 million, respectively, as of April 2015. At the same time, the number of broadband subscribers reached 100.76 million as of April 2015.
In the wireless segment private service providers held 91.65 per cent of the market share, while state-run BSNL and MTNL held only 8.35 per cent market share, Among the operators, Bharti Airtel had the maximum number of wireless subscribers at 228.25 million, followed by Vodafone India (184.56 million), Idea Cellular (159.20 million), Reliance Communications (109.80 million), Aircel (82.01 million), Tata Teleservices (62.56 million), Uninor (46.78 million).
Meanwhile a total of 3.17 million subscribers submitted their requests for mobile number portability during April 2015.
