TRAI releases data on telephone subscriber base for July 2014

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telephone subscriber base in India increased from 942.95 million at the end of June 2014 to 946.40 million at the end of July 2014, registering a growth of 0.37 per cent.

The share of urban subscribers has increased from 559.7 million at the end of June 2014 to 562.4 million at the end of July 2014. Further, the share of rural subscribers has increased from 383.1 million to 383.9 million in the same time period.  As per TRAI, the overall teledensity increased from 75.80 per cent in June 2014 to 76.0 per cent in July 2014.

The country's total wireless subscriber base increased from 914.9 million at the end of June 2014 to 918.7 million at the end of July 2014, registering a monthly growth of 0.42 per cent. The overall wireless teledensity in India reached 73.78 per cent as on end-July 2014.

As of July 2014, private operators held 90.05 per cent of the wireless market, while state-owned operators - Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) together held 9.95 per cent market share.

Among the private players, Vodafone India added maximum subscribers in July 2014, with 1.36 million new users joining the network, thereby increasing its subscriber base to 171.2 billion. Bharti Airtel added 0.51 million new subscribers to take its base to 209.7 million at the end of July 2014, while Idea Cellular added 1.1 million users in July 2014 resulting in a subscriber base of 140.1 million. Uninor added 0.85 million subscribers and Reliance Communications (RCOM) added 0.5 million new subscribers in July 2014. As of end-July 2014, the total subscriber base for Uninor and RCOM stood at 40.1 million and 109.3 million respectively. Tata Teleservices Limited added 0.61 million customers, which led to a total subscriber base of 63.4 million by end-July 2014. Aircel reached the subscriber base of 73.9 million, with addition of 0.91 million new customers in July 2014. On the other hand, BSNL lost 1.39 million users, which resulted in a reduced subscriber base of 88.0 million subscribers as of end-July 2014.

Meanwhile, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 68.83 million at the end of June 2014 to 70.81 million at the end of July 2014, exhibiting the monthly growth rate of 2.87 per cent.
