Total telephone subscriber base in India grows marginally in July 2015, says TRAI
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the total telephone subscriber base in India grew slightly by 0.23 per cent from 1.0069 customers as of June 2015 to 1.0093 billion as the end of July 2015, driven by increase in the number of mobile subscribers.
The telecom industry witnessed an addition of 2.36 million customers in July 2015 as against 4.91 million subscribers in June 2015. Meanwhile, the total wireless subscriber base increased from 980.8 million as of June 2015 to 983.2 million as of July 2015.
The wireless subscriber addition was led by Bharti Airtel which over a 1 million customers in July 2015. Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications followed with net addition of 679,000 and 534,000 subscribers respectively. Aircel added 314,000 subscribers, Tata Teleservices Limited 142,000, Videocon Telecommunications 201,000 and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited added 22,212 customers during July 2015. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited witnessed an addition of 479,000 customers in July 2015 as against a decline of 269,000 subscribers in the previous month.
However, in the fixed-line segment, both state-owned entities witnessed a decline in their subscriber base in July 2015, with BSNL and MTNL losing 73,076 and 2,342 customers respectively. In contrast, Bharti Airtel witnessed maximum addition in fixed-line customer base of 25,441 users in July 2015.
