Union Cabinet proposes a cess on SUC to support the Swachch Bharat campaign
January 09, 2015
The Union Cabinet has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) if it can introduce a cess on the annual spectrum usage charge (SUC) for the Swachch Bharat campaign. The proposal regarding the same is to be presented in front of the cabinet by January 15, 2015. Currently, telecom operators pay 5 per cent of the annual revenue as SUC for spectrum bought through auctions. The additional fee levied on this charge will be added to the Swachch Bharat fund.
Swachch Bharat is India's cleanliness drive which was launched on October 2, 2014. Under this initiative, the government intends to ensure sanitation for all country residents, besides cleanliness of streets, roads and public infrastructure. At present, the government is accepting monetary donations from private and public including philanthropic contributions and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds to finance sanitation activities.- Most Viewed
