TRAI issues new regulations on standards of quality of services for wireless data services
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued “The Standards of Quality of Service for Wireless Data Services (Amendment) Regulations, 2014”. The new regulation mandates the telecom service providers to adhere to quality of service norms.
As per the new regulation, the telecom operators are required to provide information regarding the minimum data speeds that will be provided to their customers in their data plans. Further, service providers are required to provide this download speed to the consumer for not less than eighty per cent of the usage time. The telecom operators have also been directed to publish the details of these benchmark speeds at their complaint centres, sale outlets as well as on their website.
TRAI will publish the performance of these telecom service providers every quarter. This report will state the performance of the company in meeting quality of service parameters as against the minimum speeds published by them.
Earlier in April-May 2014, the regulator had held a public consultation process, after receiving complaints from mobile users on low download speeds.
