DRI issues showcause notice to Samsung India for duty evasion
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has issued a showcause notice to Samsung India for evading import duty worth Rs 700 million.
According to DRI, the company had allegedly imported tablets valued at Rs 4600 million by declaring them as mobile phones and thus evaded import duty on the consignment. A duty of about 12 per cent is applicable for importing tablets as against one per cent on the import of mobile phones. The showcause notice to Samsung India has been issued for importing the tablets from South Korea between April 2012 and February 2013.
In the showcause notice, DRI has asked the company why the consignment should not be seized by the authority for the alleged evasion of import duty.
