Rajan Dutta, President, Corporate HR, Reliance Communications Limited
Under the first, Dutta’s tasks are to create a “happy people’s organisation” by encouraging all employees to work productively and actively participate in events and group initiatives. The development-centric tasks entail building employee competence through various programmes and modules. To achieve operational excellence, RCOM has undertaken several initiatives, including re-engineering the organisation’s design and structure, enhancing operational excellence and introducing various systems, processes and policies.
To accomplish these tasks, Dutta pursues a multi-faceted style of management. “My style of operation is facilitative and is aimed at development, ensuring employee participation, involvement and engagement. Broadly, it’s about leading from the front and walking the talk,” he comments.
An MBA from Punjab University, Dutta brings to the table over 27 years of work experience in the areas of HR and total quality management (TQM). Prior to joining RCOM, he worked with Modi Xerox, RPG Enterprises, Idea Cellular, Bharti Airtel and Lupin Limited. He has been working with RCOM for the past four years.
Besides, he has been associated with several professional associations such as the National HRD Network, the National Centre for Quality Management and the Delhi Management Association in various capacities.
At RCOM, he says the main challenges before him are keeping the operator ahead of the competition and tackling the issues of reduction in the average revenue per minute and minutes of usage.
Going forward, Dutta says that 3G, data, mobile number portability (MNP) and value-added services will be the main growth drivers for the company. He elaborates: “3G will be important, largely owing to its potential in providing faster service delivery. Further, MNP will enable us to capitalise on both our quality of customer service and quality and spread of our network.”
“VAS is helping us enhance our portfolio of data and content-based services. Mobile VAS such as mobile TV, mobile banking and mobile entertainment are our future innovations,” he says.
In sum, Dutta seems geared up to keep abreast of competition. When not busy streamlining RCOM’s operations, he enjoys reading magazines on HR and TQM, and spending time with his family.- Most Viewed
