Sukanto Aich, President, Enterprise Business, Tata Teleservices Limited

Sukanto Aich, President, Enterprise Busi...
For Sukanto Aich, president, enterprise business, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL), childhood was a time of fun, of meeting and mixing with people from different walks of life. “Most of my childhood was spent in small towns and not metro cities. In such places, one gets the opportunity to bond with different communities, each of them offering a unique learning. Moreover, childhood was a lot of fun and physical games, getting dirty in the mud, etc., the kind of things that are a little difficult to explain to today’s generation of virtual Facebook communities.”

He also grew up on a healthy dose of discipline; a legacy of his Jesuit schooling which he says has guided him throughout his career. “A strong sense of discipline coupled with my childhood ambition of wanting to lead a corporate business operation has helped me reach where I am today,” he says.

After obtaining a postgraduate diploma in management from IIM, Calcutta, he started his career in the enterprise market segment, working with organisations like HCL, Bharti Airtel, Bennett & Coleman, and TTSL. “While most of the assignments have involved managing profit and loss functions, my stint with Bennett & Coleman gave me an insight into the world of balance sheet financing and equity funding,” he says.

Aich joined TTSL a little less than two years ago. Explaining the career move, he says, “The Tata brand has always promised a professional work atmosphere, and high ethics and integrity. So, when the opportunity at TTSL came my way, the choice seemed obvious.”

He is responsible for the company’s profit and loss function, straddling all aspects of the customer life cycle. He elaborates: “I am responsible for providing a variety of services for the enterprise segment in a manner that ensures our products and services offer the best value proposition to our customers.”

To achieve this, he relies on a team-centric management style. “I believe that each member of the team brings a unique contribution to the table and needs to be respected as a professional, irrespective of hierarchy. In today’s world, a leader cannot grow the business unless he learns to delegate work effectively. Delegation and a hands-on approach can work hand-in-hand, depending on the situation. As a leader, I have tried to adopt a mix of both approaches in my management style,” he says.

Aich likes to unwind by travelling with his family, reading and spending time with his daughter
