Reliance Infocomm has stated that it is opposed to the introduction of mobile number portability (MNP), which allows mobile subscribers to change their service provider while retaining the number. Its contention is that there is enough competition in the mobile telephony market, thus allowing customers to easily change operators. In response to the consultation paper on MNP floated by TRAI in July, Reliance has said that investments and network interconnect arrangements required for putting in place such a system would far outweigh the benefits of MNP. Besides, MNP would be more beneficial in the landline sector given the limited competition there.
