Maxis Communications appoints Ericsson to expand its 3G network

Maxis Communications Bhd has appointed Ericsson to expand its 3G network and upgrade it to 3.5G. The 3.5G technology, or HSDPA, enables data transfer speeds of up to 1-2 Mbps, which is up to five times faster than the existing 3G speeds. Trials for HSDPA are expected to begin in the first quarter of next year and its launch is targeted for mid-2006. Maxis also extended Ericsson'smanaged services contract, giving the Swedish firm responsibility for managing and operating Maxis's 3G network and equipment in all areas of coverage.
