The communications and IT ministry has invited bids from private and public telecom companies to for the setting up of 28,000 wireline broadband exchanges and 6,000 satellite sites, in order to promote broadband internet penetration in the rural areas. The project will be funded by the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund, which has recently received Rs 24 billion from the government for subsidising mobile, internet and landline operations in rural India.
