Japanese telecom operator KDDI has chosen Nortel and Hitachi to deploy its long term evolution (LTE) network, which will be overlaid on the telecom service provider's existing CDMA network.

The LTE network will be cost effective and interoperable with the current network. Hitachi will provide an evolved packet core (EPC) for the LTE network while Nortel will deliver its advanced telecommunications computing architecture-based access gateway.
