TRAI has initiated a consultation process for reducing the cap on the number of tariff plans an operator can offer. Currently, an operator is allowed to offer a maximum of 25 tariff plans in a circle. However, according to TRAI, about 75 per cent of the subscriber base is basically on five to seven tariff schemes and hence it is not necessary for operators to have 25 tariffs per operator.
TRAI has also sought comments on the steps needed to improve transparency in tariffs. TRAI is of the view that if there are any changes in the chosen tariff package, the operator should inform the impacted subscribers.
