Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has reported a loss of 90,000 landline subscribers in Mumbai during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005. This has resulted in its total subscriber base in the city dropping to 2.3 million from 2.4 million. Although the company claims to be adding 15,000 new customers every month, the loss of landlines is due to the surrender of phones and disconnection of service by the company on account of non-payment of bills. Despite this, the net addition to MTNL's subscriber base was about 2.3 million for 2004-05.
This figure includes a net addition of 290,000 GSM subscribers and 40,000 CDMA subscribers, and a net loss of 90,000 landline subscribers.
