DoT is likely to reject the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)'s recommendation to impose a new annual licence fee (6 per cent of the adjusted gross revenue) on internet service providers (ISPs).

July 15, 2007

DoT is likely to reject the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)'s recommendation to impose a new annual licence fee (6 per cent of the adjusted gross revenue) on internet service providers (ISPs). TRAI had recommended the move in order to bring parity between the unified access service licences (UASLs) and ISP licences. Currently, UASL service providers have to pay 6 per cent of their revenue share as licence fee. However, according to DoT, imposing a licence fee on ISPs is likely to hamper the growth of internet services in India. Meanwhile, DoT is likely to accept TRAI's recommendation of charging ISPs an entry-level licence fee of Rs 2 million and Rs 1 million for nationaland statelevel licences respectively.
