In order to reduce roaming tariffs, TRAI plans to mandate compul-sory roaming agreements among mobile operators. Telecom service providers have opposed this move on two counts. First, roaming arrangements between GSM and CDMA operators pose technical problems as they require the use of costlier dual-mode handsets. Second, any arrangement between BSNL and other operators would pose commercial problems as BSNL's roaming charges are lower than those of others. TRAI's recommendations are expected by end-January 2007.
