An internal committee of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reportedly recommended that the existing spectrum caps should not be increased. The committee is of the view that enhancing the spectrum caps could lead to large telecom operators creating a dominant position in the market.
The Telecom Commission will take a final decision on the issue. As per the existing norms, a telecom operator cannot hold more than 25 per cent of the total spectrum assigned to all companies in a circle and over 50 per cent of total spectrum assigned in a particular frequency band. Meanwhile, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had also recommended that the present spectrum caps should not be hiked.
