Total telecom subscriber base stood at 1,006.96 million at end-June 2015, says TRAI

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the total telephone subscriber base in the country grew marginally from 1,002.0 million at end-May 2015 to 1,006.96 million at end-June 2015. The total wireless base (GSM and CDMA) grew by 0.51 per cent from 975.7 million to 980.8 million, whereas the total wireline subscriber base declined from 26.2 million to 26.1 million, during the same period.

As of June 30, 2015, the total urban teledensity stood at 149.70 per cent, while the rural teledensity stood at 48.66 per cent. The wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 558.8 million at end-May 2015 to 562.9 million at end-June 2015. Meanwhile, the wireless subscription in rural areas increased from 416.9 million to 417.8 million during the same period.

The highest growth rate in wireless subscribers during the given period was recorded for the West Bengal circle.  The Uttar Pradesh (East), Jammu &Kashmir and Tamil Nadu (including Chennai) circles, on the other hand, reported a decline in the total subscriber base during June 2015. In June 2015, a total of 3.68 million subscribers submitted mobile number portability (MNP) requeste.

In terms of market share, the private service providers held 91.75 per cent of the total wireless subscribers market whereas Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) held 8.25 per cent share of the market. At the end of June 2015, the wireless base of Bharti Airtel stood at 230.6 million, Vodafone India at 185.3 million, Idea Cellular at 162.0 million, Reliance Communications at 109.9 million, Tata Teleservices Limited at 61.5 million, Aircel at 83.0 million, Uninor at 48.1 million, Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited at 8.69 million and Videocon Telecom at 7.6 million.
