The Kerala government has invited tender for offering free Wi-Fi services in select public places in the state. The initiative is part of digital India mission in Kerala and the government plans to offer free Wi-Fi services for at least one hour.

As per the Wi-Fi tender, the service provider will be required to offer free internet access to government websites. All websites should be accessible in one minute after opening the browser. The responsibility of the service provider will be to set up Wi-Fi equipments, while the state will provide mobile towers, electricity posts of Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and few buildings to set up the Wi-Fi service.

Initially, the Kerala government will roll out free Wi-Fi services in Trivandrum, Kochi and Kozhikode corporations and two panchayats in all districts and municipalities. Earlier, the government had announced its plans to offer free Wi-Fi services in 5,000 government schools as part of its ‘IT at school’ initiative. The government had also launched free Wi-Fi services in government offices in the Malappuram district.
