The government has extended the deadline for submission of public comments on report of Department of Telecommunications (DoT) committee on Net Neutrality till August 20, 2015.
The DoT panel in its report had recommended regulation of domestic voice over IP (VoIP) services by putting them on par with services offered by telecom operators. However, the committee has suggested a liberal approach towards international VoIP. The report further recommends prohibiting operators and internet service providers (ISP), and content providers from collaborating on zero rating plans, which has drawn severe criticism from the industry on its possible negative implications on provisioning of mobile services in rural areas.
The government will announce the final regulations on the issue after considering public opinion and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s suggestions.
