The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will approach the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) seeking suggestions from the latter on addressing the issue of call drop. To this end, DoT will apprise TRAI on the data received from the special audit conducted by DoT in July 2015. The audit was undertaken to assess the coverage and quality of service of all mobile operators in metro cities in order to address the problem of call drops. DoT has received data for most of the areas.
DoT is also analysing the reports submitted by operators regarding the measures undertaken by each one of them to address the issue of call drops.
According to DoT, there are various reasons for call drops including the increased data growth. Further, the redistribution of spectrum after the March 2015 auctions has aggravated the problem. The operators are not investing much in the 1800 MHz band for GSM since expect the demand for GSM services on this band to decline going forward. Instead, they are allocating large chunk of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band for provisioning of LTE services, which currently do not have many takers.
