TRAI releases telecom subscription data for the month ended January 2015

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 970.97 million in December 2014 to 979.21 million in January 2015, exhibiting a growth rate of 0.85 per cent.

The urban subscriber base increased from 572.29 million in December 2014 to 575.05 million in January 2015 while the rural subscriber base grew from 398.68 million to 404.16 million during the same period. The overall teledensity in the country increased from 77.58 per cent to 78.16 per cent between December 2014 and January 2015. During the same period, the total wireless subscriber base increased from 943.97 million to 952.34 million, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.89 per cent. In contrast, the wireline subscriber base declined from 27 million in December 2014 to 26.87 million in January 2015, a fall of 0.49 per cent. The number of broadband subscribers also increased, registering a growth of 10.21 per cent as they increased from 85.74 million in December 2014 to 94.49 million in January 2015.

On the mobile number portability (MNP) front, a total of 3.56 million subscribers submitted their requests for shifting their network operator in January 2015. With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 142.98 million in December 2014 to 146.54 million at the end of January 2015.
