The Supreme Court has allowed the government to conduct the spectrum auctions on March 4, 2015. However, the apex court has stated that the results of the upcoming auctions will be conditional to its decision and nothing would be finalised without its consent. This translates into the fact that no auction winner will be able to claim equity just by winning a bid in the forthcoming auction.

The Supreme Court’s order has come after the government filed a petition objecting the telecom operators approaching different high courts to modify the rules/guidelines in the Notice Inviting Application.

In this regard, the Supreme Court has also restrained all high courts and the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal from interfering in the auction process till it gives the decision on the government's petition. Earlier, the telecom operators- Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Sistema Shyam Teleservices Limited and Reliance Telecom- separately filed petitions against the various spectrum auction guidelines in different courts.
