The Department of Telecommunications has granted clearances to Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL), the telecom arm of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), to set up international internet gateways for its 4G operations. With the approval from DoT, the operator will be able to set up the gateways at Navi Mumbai, and State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited’s IT Park in Chennai.
The final approval has come following clearances from the inter-ministerial group on Internet Monitoring System. The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), the telecommunications technology development centre, also approved RCOM’s gateway set up.
Earlier, DoT had given security clearances to RJIL to start its 4G services in six circles - Kolkata, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat circles.
RJIL holds spectrum in the 1800 MHz band across 14 circles and also has pan-India spectrum in the 2300 MHz band. The company is planning to launch its 4G services in 2015.
